Why Should I give? - By Fr. Paul Turner
Members:
The Last reason I give to a church is to help pay its bills. The first reason I give to a church is to give thanks to God. After all, everything I have belongs to God. I received it all as a gift. I am a steward of what God owns.
Giving helps keep my priorities in place. Ite reminds me that others have needs, and I am responsible for my neighbor. Giving keeps me from spending too much on myself.
Pledging helps me plan my expenses. I set a goal for my giving, and I work at it all year.
Stewardship means more than giving money. I share my time with my Church. I share my talents too. If I cannot give much treasure, I can still give my heart and hands.
The church has bills to pay. I want to help out. But it's the last reason I give. I give because God has Given to me. I give to say thanks!
Visitors:
Whenever I visit another church, I always contribute to the collection. I am greateful that they've opened their doors to me, and I know that they cannot do this on the Sunday that I visit unless they are open the other 51 Sundays of the year tooo. I make a generouse gift to show the size of my gratitude.
Like you, when I visit another city over a weekend, given a choice of where to worship, I prefer the Cathedral. A bishop celebrates the most important events in the diocese there each year. In many cities, it is also a thriving parish.
Our cathedral's annual budget is just over $1 million, so staying open costs us over $90,000 a moth.
In addition to our ordinary expenses for this historic building, we hire people to provide worship for members and visitors, formation in faith that prepares for the sacraments, opportunities to build a friendly community withing urban sprawl, and meals for the homeless.
This cathedral is also a parish with a downtown membership no larger than some rural communities. Gifts from our visitors help us provide services for more visitors to come.
Thank you for supporting our ministry. We are blessed to have you here. Welcome to the cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph.
